Interview Hints and Tips
- When you register with the IRC your consultant will work with you in order to produce a CV which will be an accurate and concise summary of your career history.
- It is important that there are no gaps on your CV if you spent time travelling then this also needs to be included in your CV.
- Do not be tempted to embellish details on your CV as employers will take up references. An offer of employment may be withdrawn if the reference does not match the information you have provided.
- When you are invited for interview you can feel confident that the prospective employer has viewed your CV and therefore you in a positive light, remember the person you are going to see is initially positively disposed towards you. It is vital that you do not do anything to alter this initial view.
- Always arrive on time and dress smartly and introduce yourself clearly. Smile, shake hands firmly and make eye contact as you are introduced. Turn off your mobile phone and do not chew gum.
- Ensure that you have researched the company beforehand to get a good idea of their background. This shows a genuine interest in the company.
- Know what position you are being interviewed for and where possible ensure you have been provided with a copy of the job description, read this prior to the interview.
- Think about the kind of questions they will ask you based on your experience and the job description, e.g. your strengths and examples of when you have put these into practice.
- Think of any questions you may have for them, e.g. have they any plans to expand the company in the near future? What training is on offer for the role? What are your career prospects?
- Avoid making derogatory comments regarding your present or former employers it may be interpreted as you having a negative attitude.
- Be aware of your body language, do not slouch, cross your arms, fidget or stare at the table. You need to look interested, keep your hands in your lap, lean slightly forward, make eye contact and above all else listen to the questions you are being asked.
- Avoid enquiries about salary, holidays bonuses etc during the first interview.
- When you are leaving, if you have not been advised, ask what the next stage of the recruitment process is and when you should be notified.
